Surviving Cancer is not the end of a gruesome story. It is the beginning of a beautiful one...
Doctors put drugs of which they know little into bodies of which they know less for diseases of which they know nothing at all.

Understanding Cancer:

Cancer is a disease caused by uncontrolled cell growth that can lead to the formation of tumors. These abnormal cells have lost the ability to follow the body’s natural regulatory mechanisms, leading to unchecked growth. Cancer can take various forms and is classified into different types based on the organ or tissue where it originates. A tumor is considered benign if it remains confined to one organ, while metastatic cancer refers to cancer cells that spread to other parts of the body. Blood cancers, like leukemia, do not form solid tumors but instead affect blood cells, bone marrow, or lymphatic systems.

Genetic vs. Environmental Causes of Cancer:

According to research from NCBI, while 5–10% of all cancer cases are attributed to genetic defects, the remaining 90–95% are linked to environmental factors and lifestyle choices. This includes factors such as smoking, diet, physical activity, exposure to environmental carcinogens, and viral infections. Therefore, many types of cancer are preventable through lifestyle changes, early detection, and proper interventions.

Genetic Changes in Cancer:

Cancer results from mutations or changes in the DNA of cells. These genetic alterations can disrupt normal cell functions and lead to cancer. The three main types of genes involved in the development of cancer are:

  1. Proto-oncogenes: These genes normally help cells grow. When mutated, they become oncogenes, causing cells to grow uncontrollably.

  2. Tumor suppressor genes: These genes normally prevent excessive cell growth. Mutations or loss of function of these genes (e.g., p53, BRCA1, BRCA2) lead to unchecked cell division.

  3. DNA repair genes: These genes are responsible for correcting errors in DNA replication. If these genes are mutated, the errors accumulate, leading to cancer.
